Top Questions Every Couple Should Ask Their Wedding Photographer

The Questions That Truly Matter

If I had a dollar for every time a couple told me, “We have no idea what to ask a wedding photographer,” I’d probably have enough to fund an underwater camera housing (#personalgoals). The truth is, sorting through contracts, packages, and timelines can feel like a full-time job before the big day even arrives.

One of my favorite moments during a recent consultation came when a couple said, “We talked to another photographer, and they counted their travel time in the photography coverage. Is that normal?” Cue me putting down my coffee and saying, “Let’s talk. For real.”

That question sparked an important conversation – one I wish more couples knew to have.

So today, I want to walk you through the questions that actually matter. The ones that help you feel empowered, informed, and in sync with your photographer. If you’re planning a wedding in Saint Petersburg, Florida, or anywhere in this sunshine-filled state, I’m here to give you full transparency.

Because your story deserves clarity, connection, and photos that reflect who you really are.

First, Let’s Talk About Expectations

Look, weddings are deeply personal. Whether your day is unplugged on Treasure Island or an elegant garden ceremony in Downtown St. Pete, it’s going to move fast. And your photographer? We’re with you almost all day, quietly capturing everything from lace details during prep to raw emotions on the dance floor.

That’s why booking a photographer isn’t just checking a box. You want someone you feel relaxed around, someone you trust with your memories and your people.

Many of my couples are professionals. They’re used to doing their research…but they’re also navigating a sea of options. It’s not about a checklist of technical specs; it’s about knowing your priorities, asking real questions, and building a relationship based on trust.

So let’s dive into the questions that give you the answers that matter most.

Essential Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

1. “Does all of my coverage time go toward actual photography?”
This one matters more than most people realize. Some couples get burned by coverage that includes travel, setup, or other details…and that eats into the moments they wanted documented.

If you book me for eight hours, that’s eight hours of photography – not driving or checking gear. That time is entirely for you. I do sometimes step aside to eat (because I’m human!), but I always seek to step aside during those moments when there’s a lull in the action. You deserve to know exactly what you’re truly getting.

2. “Are there any additional travel fees?”
Some photographers add fees for locations outside certain zones. With me, there are no extra travel fees for any in-state Florida weddings. If you’re deciding between Clearwater Beach and Gulfport, or your venue changes later, your photography cost stays the same. That flexibility and consistency is important. No surprises.

3. “Will we – and our family – be able to download the full gallery?”
This one’s huge. Some photographers limit the number of images you receive or restrict guest downloads. I believe your memories shouldn’t be behind a paywall.

You’ll receive your full gallery with full personal printing rights. Your guests can download and print images too. While I recommend my professional lab for color and longevity, you’re not locked in. Your images belong to you.

4. “What’s your editing style?”
Editing style shapes the entire feel of your photos. Is it light and airy, moody and dark, timeless and true-to-color? Mine is clean, true-to-life, and classic – the kind of edit that stands the test of time so future you won’t cringe when you show the photos to your grandkids.

Never assume every photographer edits the same. If you’re hoping for trendy tones or dramatic retouching, ask how your photographer approaches editing so expectations stay aligned and intentional.

5. “Can we see a full wedding gallery?”
I always encourage this. Ideally, you’ll be able to view a gallery from a wedding similar in setting, style, or timeline to your own – but if a photographer doesn’t have an exact match, don’t write them off. What matters most is their ability to capture what you care about most, whether that’s raw emotion, beautiful portraits, or a seamless blend of both throughout the story of the day.

Every image on my site is photographed by me, so what you see reflects my genuine work and approach. When you browse a gallery, notice the transitions and unscripted moments, not just the portraits. That’s where you can really see how a photographer tells a story.

6. “What’s your policy on model releases and image use?”
Photographers include model releases so they can showcase your images. I do too, but never at the expense of your comfort. Some photographers charge extra for privacy requests; personally, I don’t believe you should have to pay to protect your story. If you prefer your gallery to remain private, that’s honored without cost.

7. “What Happens if There’s a Hurricane or You Get Sick?”
Florida weddings come with sunshine and the occasional storm watch. It’s important to know your photographer has a plan.

In my case, if a hurricane forces a postponement, I’ll prioritize your rescheduled date as long as it doesn’t conflict with another booked wedding. And if illness ever prevents me from being there (which would take a high fever or worse), I personally arrange a trusted professional with a similar style and approach to step in.

You deserve the peace of mind that your memories will be beautifully preserved – no matter what the weather or life brings.

8. “Are You Licensed and Insured?”
This one’s often overlooked but it’s so important. A licensed and insured photographer protects not only themselves but you and your venue, too.

Many wedding venues actually require a copy of your photographer’s insurance before the event. Having proper licensing and liability coverage ensures that everyone: you, your guests, and your investment are protected. It’s one of the simplest signs that a vendor takes their work and your day seriously.

9. “How involved are you in the planning process?”
Connection is everything. I want to know that you’re planning a spirited sendoff. I love coordinating with your planner. I welcome timelines, questions, and quirky family details. Whether you want 30 minutes for golden hour portraits or your ceremony features your pups as your flower girl and ring-bearer, I want to be in the loop. Because when I know what matters to you, I can make sure we capture and preserve it beautifully.

Why It’s Worth It to Ask

Here’s the heart of it: you only get one wedding day. And while you can’t control every twist or unexpected laugh (or Uncle Joe boogying on the dance floor), you can choose a photographer who respects your values, your rhythm, and your priorities.

Getting proactive with the right questions helps you avoid stress before it starts. Investing in real conversations upfront leads to a smoother, more joyful day and a gallery that feels like it tells your story.

So let the questions flow. Speak up about what matters to you. You deserve photography that not only looks beautiful, but does justice to your love.
