Sunken Gardens Family Photographs in St. Petersburg: A Relaxed & Kid-Friendly Session

Family

If you’re looking for a family photo location in St. Petersburg that’s equal parts breathtaking and kid-friendly, Sunken Gardens is hard to beat. With its winding paths, flamingos, and vibrant tropical blooms, it’s a place where families can explore together while I capture the laughter, connections, and quiet moments along the way.

Christine’s family recently chose this spot for their portraits, and what started as an annual photo session quickly became a memorable adventure there.

A Family Adventure Through Botanical Beauty

Christine and her crew had been looking forward to experiencing the Sunken Gardens together as a family. So with our upcoming photo session on the calendar, we decided to explore whether Sunken Gardens could also double up as our session destination. It’s always a brilliant move to have your session in a location you enjoy or are looking forward to visiting! We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the photography permit also covered everyone’s admission. (Such a win with a big family!)

We began first thing when the gardens opened at 10am in the morning. While there was still the heat and humidity of the day, there is so much shade and lush vegetation there that it still felt comfortable and calm. Right away, the kids were drawn into the magic of the place. Around every turn, there was something to discover:

  • Tadpoles and frogs wiggling in the ponds
  • Colorful parrots chatting with one another
  • Tiny lizards darting across the paths
  • And, of course, the iconic pink flamingos

Instead of stiff poses, their session unfolded naturally: just a family enjoying time together in a beautiful space, with me quietly documenting the story.

Creating Space for Real Family Moments

One of the things I love most about my St. Pete family sessions is the flexibility to let kids (and parents!) be themselves. During our session together, one of Christine’s crew started to having feelings bubble up.

If I could reassure my parents of just one thing, it would be that feelings and emotions are perfectly normal. I’ve seen everything from shy tears to full-blown sillies and everything in-between. It’s all okay.

Because I only photograph one family per day, we didn’t have to rush or force anything. Mom got a quiet moment with her oldest, while I played with the younger siblings and kept the session moving. Later, everyone came back together relaxed and ready, which meant the smiles and hugs we captured were truly genuine.

That’s the heart of family photography for me: creating space for honest moments and real connection, not pressure to be picture-perfect.

Why Sunken Gardens is Perfect for Family Photos

Natural Beauty Year-Round

Sunken Gardens is a century-old oasis tucked right into the heart of St. Petersburg. It’s filled with:

  • 50,000+ tropical plants and flowers
  • Waterfalls and koi ponds
  • Shady paths beneath towering trees
  • Garden “rooms” that feel like hidden worlds

Every corner offers a new backdrop, which means variety in your gallery without ever needing to head to a second location.

A Kid-Friendly Setting

Unlike a studio, Sunken Gardens invites curiosity. Kids can:

  • Watch for butterflies and bright birds
  • Count the flamingos (a guaranteed favorite!)
  • Explore across wooden bridges and stone pathways
  • Take breaks on shady benches when they need a pause

It’s relaxed, unhurried, and playful – the perfect recipe for natural family photographs.

5 Tips for Planning Your Own Sunken Gardens Session

  1. Book Early in the Day
Starting at opening (usually 10am) means softer light, cooler air, and fewer crowds.
  2. Dress for Comfort + Color
Choose outfits that work with the lush greens…think soft blues, whites, pinks, or yellows. Breathable fabrics are your friend in Florida weather.
  3. Pack Smart
Bring water, small snacks, and maybe a little towel for freshening up.
  4. Stay Flexible
Florida weather can surprise you. I always keep a close eye on the forecast and have backup plans in place for those just-in-case scenarios.
  5. Make it Fun
Frame the experience for your kids as a “garden adventure.” Encourage them to look for hidden animals, count flowers, or find the tallest palm. When you enjoy spending time as a family, it transforms your photos from beautiful to magical.

FAQs About Sunken Gardens Family Sessions

How much is the photo permit?
The permit is $250, which includes your family’s admission (up to 10 people).

How long is the session?
Usually 1 hour – long enough to explore, short enough to keep kids engaged.

What should we wear?
Solid colors in softer shades photograph beautifully against the greens. Avoid busy patterns, as they will cause the photos to look cluttered.

Can we bring props?
Yes, but nothing that would block the walkways for other people. Small, meaningful items like a favorite book, blanket, or toy are always welcome.

What if my child gets cranky?
We roll with it! Breaks, distractions, exploring different spots…it’s all part of the process. And oftentimes those in-between moments turn into the best photos.
